REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Urban planning expert Nirwono Yoga said Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno won the Jakarta gubernatorial election because of their stance towards Jakarta bay reclamation. Therefore, Anies and Sandi must be firm in responding the issue.
Anies-Sandi policy on reclamation islands should reflect their stance, Nirwono said . He expected, Jakarta governor-elect and his deputy-elect's words must allign with their action.
"Don't let them say they support moratorium but the construction of reclamation island kept on going," he said.
Nevertheless, Nirwono said it would not be realistic to dismantle existing reclamation islets. The best solution, according to Nirwono, is to compromise.
"Anies and Sandi must figure out the best utilization of C, D and G islets," he remarked in Jakarta, Monday (October 9).
Nirwono asked Anies and Sandi to be firm to their subordinates. He assesed some of the officials tend to support the reclamation project.
Opposing reclamation is one of Anies-Sandi campaign promises, beside zero percent down payment for housing and OK-OC programs, Nirwono said. "Anies and Sandi get elected by the people, so they must realize their promises," he reiterated.
The reclamation project became subject to hot debate during the gubernatorial election campaign this year. During the campaign period, Anis and Sandi repeatedly vowed to stop the project.
They assessed reclamation was environmentally unfriendly and would disrupt the livelihoods of fishermen and people around the project's area, and many more.
On October 5, Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has lifted moratorium on Jakarta's bay reclamation project. He said all parties, including new government of DKI Jakarta, must accept his decision.
Luhut has also told Anies and Sandiaga that the Jakarta bay reclamation project should be continued as it is one of the central government's long-awaited projects, that date back to the former president Soeharto era.
He said research on the development of the artificial islets had been conducted since the former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono administration.
Later, the project was being continued under the leadership of President Joko Widodo.
Jakarta's bay reclamation project is a project initiated by the Jakarta city administration involving the construction of 17 manmade island on the northern coast of the city, developed by private companies.
