Pedestrian bridge collapse due to poor billboard installation

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Director General of Bina Marga Roads Agency Arie Setiadi Moerwanto said special team has investigated the collapsed of Pasar Minggu pedestrian bridge (JPO) in South Jakarta.

The team concluded poor installation of advertisement billboard caused the collapse. The installation was not in accordance with the construction of the bridge.

"Assessment from special team said the billboard was not installed in the buffer construction, but at the plate bridge. When it hitted by strong winds hit, the billboard was not able to withstand it," he said.

After the incident, the Government through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) ensured they will improve construction standards of the pedestrian bridge.

"We will refine the standard and others. Today (28/9), we invited bridge construction experts and 22 heads of Bina Marga to discuss improvements procedures of pedestrian bridge construction as prevention," Arie said on Wednesday (28/9).

Arie also said that the authorities of pedestrian bridge are widely varied. If located on the national road, the bridge is authorized by central government. Located in the province, its under the authority of the provincial government and etc.

The Ministry of PUPR as the supervisor of road in Indonesia will create clear standards and regulations for the installation and maintenance of the JPO.

"We will make clear standards and regulations such as how the installation of and maintenance. If the local administration has no expert, we will provide it," Arie said.

Four people died and six others injured when Pasar Minggu JPO collapsed last Saturday afternoon (9/24). Previously, heavy rain and strong wind was assumed as the cause of the collapse.
