Two smelters worth Rp 6.4 trillion built in Bantaeng

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANTAENG -- Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) noted that two smelter companies were doing process of construction in Bantaeng with a total investment value of Rp 6.4 trillion. Both companies were PT Titan Mineral Utama (TMU) with an investment of Rp 4.7 trillion and PT Huadi Nickel-Alloy Indonesia (HNAI) with an investment of 130 million US dollars or Rp 1.7 trillion.

Head of BKPM Franky Sibarani said, industrial realization of the project was positive in downstream investment, especially in mining sector in South Sulawesi. This was in line with the mandate of Law No. 4 of 2009 on Mineral and Coal which requires an increase in mineral resources by mining processing and refining in the country.

"Development industrial projects of processing and refining mineral materials or smelter can positively contribute to economic development in Indonesia," Franky said, in a statement, on Tuesday (8/12).

According to Franky, the construction of smelter also required support and cooperation of all stakeholders from government, private and state-owned companies. Thus, the smelter which was based on natural resources, could provide multiplier effects to all parties.

In 2016, these two smelters in Bantaeng were expected to be in commercial production. In addition, the construction of the smelters could provide added value investment capacity of nickel in Sulawesi, and would become one of the largest among countries that were producing and processing of nickel in the world.

"Realization of nickel smelter investment and Bantaeng Industrial Zone proved commitment of South Sulawesi Provincial Government and Bantaeng Regency Government in encouraging achievement of value-added mineral nickel in Indonesia," said Franky.

The companies were optimistic that the process of construction of nickel smelters plant could be completed in December 2015. Meanwhile, in January 2016, HNAI would conduct trial production and the production and initial export was expected to be started in February 2016.
