REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Rupiah rose slightly by 3 points to Rp13,987 on Friday evening from the previous day's close of Rp13,990 per U.S. dollar.

The Rupiah strengthened after fluctuating amidst uncertainty about whether the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) would adjust its benchmark rate in September, market analyst Rully Nova said on Friday.

"The government policy is focused on stabilizing the domestic sentiment by balancing external sentiment," he said.

Hopefully, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo?s assurance that the government has prepared a set of policies to deal with the Rupiah's declining exchange rate against the U.S. dollar will be realized soon. So it will not be just a discourse in the market, he said.

After all, the Rupiah will still be pressured if the second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) and manpower data of the United States is positive, prompting the Fed to raise its rates in September, he stated.

"Right now, many investors believe the Fed will raise its interest rates in September. Therefore, the Rupiah's appreciation will still be limited," he said.

The Research Chief of Monex Investindo Futures, Ariston Tjendra, said that if U.S. GDP data strengthened, the Fed's chance of raising its benchmark rate in September would become strong.

"Fed officials are also discussing the issue of a low U.S. inflation rate. The dollar may strengthen further if the inflation data is not very different from the market estimate," he said.
