South Korea: Indonesia is so important for us

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia is very important for South Korea in terms of economic cooperation, South Korean Deputy Prime Minister Hwang Woo-Yea said.

"Indonesia is very important for Korea. Indonesia is the first country where Korea realized its foreign investment. So, from the standpoint of trade or investment, Indonesia is so important for us," Woo-Yea said on the sidelines of Asian-African Summit at the Jakarta Convention Center on Thursday.

While in Indonesia, the South Korean deputy prime minister also held bilateral talks with Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

At the meeting, Woo-Yea expressed hope that the two countries would forge their friendship by increasing bilateral cooperation.

Indonesia and South Korea are currently discussing potentials of cooperation particularly in the fields of infrastructure, manufacturing and agriculture. Both nations have long cooperated in developing chemical, defense and steel industries.

Judging by the potentials of cooperation, South Korea will follow up on the cooperation in the fields of infrastructure and agriculture, he said.

"Cooperation between the two countries in the manufacturing field has run very smoothly. Where cooperation in the fields of infrastructure and agriculture is concerned. soon after I arrive in Korea, I will discuss it with the economic ministers. We will cooperate in the three areas," he said.

"I also told Vice President Jusuf Kalla that 500 thousand Indonesians are currently employed in South Korea. We are am prepared to share our experience and knowledge and we also proposed cooperation in the educational field," he said.
