Minister: President wants severe punishment for criminals of illegal logging

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo wants severe punishment for illegal logging to give a true deterrent. Legal process must be held for illegal logging suspects without interference, the president was quoted as saying by Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar on Wednesday night. '

Bakar said the government thought it was important to give a deterrent effect on the perpetrators to stop illegal logging in the country. She cited some illegal logging convicts got light sentences. Some suspects were even acquitted," she said.

Currently illegal logging committed a forestry company has not led to revocation of the operation license of the company. She said the crime was always charged against individuals of the company, although there was evaluation of the reputation of the companies whose personnel involved in illegal logging. Hence, it is important to create integration and coordination of work between related agencies such as regional administration and police or the military to stamp out illegal logging.

She said the president already had the general description of law enforcement against illegal logging from the people and non governmental organizations. The government concluded that continuity was important in fighting illegal. Thden the government would intensified its control and law inforcemnoy.
