REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Government assigned Bulog as an official agency to import meat ahead of the fasting month of Ramadhan. The decree allows Bulog to start importing without waiting for status as Registered Importer.

"Bulog does not need special permission because Bulog is assigned as a state-owned company," Director General of Foreign Trade at Ministry of Trade, Bahrul Chairi said on Thursday.

Ministry of Trade has issued decree No. 22/2013 to subtitute the previous one, of decree No. 24/2011 which regulates the import and export of live stock.

"We are still exploring opportunities to become a meat importer, as our role as a stabilizer agency. From a business standpoint, Bulog is difficult to gain profit since it is only allowed to import limited amount needed in 'market operation'," President Director of Bulog, Sutarto Aliemoso said on Thursday, referred to an operation run by government to stabilize market price.

Bulog needs about 250 billion to 350 billion IDR for this special assignment. The fund will be sufficient to import around 3,000 to 5,000 tons of meat. The meat imported by Bulog will be distributed in Jakarta and West Java only.
