REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BENGKULU -- The Japanese government, in cooperation with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), held a disaster risk reduction program in several areas of Bengkulu Province.
"In these two years, Japan has supported us through a community-based integrated disaster risk reduction program," Vice Chairman of the Bengkulu Provincial PMI Asnawi Lamat stated at the commemoration of the 72nd anniversary of PMI here, Friday.
He noted that the Japanese Red Cross and PMI of Bengkulu Province are cooperating to implement the Community-Based Disaster Preparedness Program in several villages and sub-districts in Bengkulu City, Seluma District, and Kaur District.
The three districts and city are located along the West Coast of Bengkulu, which is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. The program also aims to improve the economy of the local communities.
"The program is planned to be implemented for three years, with the aim of creating a community resilient to earthquakes and tsunamis," he noted.
Lamat added that Bengkulu is an area prone to earthquakes and tsunami disasters, as it lies in an area where the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide.
The collisions between these tectonic plates form an earthquake path, with thousands of epicenter points that make Indonesia, especially Bengkulu, prone to earthquakes and tsunamis.
