REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The general chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI), Ma'ruf Amin, has appealed to all Muslims in the country to celebrate the Eid al Fitr festival in a modest fashion, avoiding any extravaganza.

"Do not do it extravagantly. Be modest in celebrating the Eid in view of the current (economic) condition," he said after attending a meeting here on Monday to determine when Eid al Fitr would fall.

Following the meeting, Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saefuddin announced that Eid al Fitr would fall on Wednesday, July 6.

Ma'ruf Amin reminded that the most important thing with regard to Eid is for the devout to do their best to return towards the path of purity.

He underlined that the month-long fast is basically aimed at guiding the Muslims to their state of purity.

"We must return to the path of purity after fasting. During fasting, we trained ourselves to be patient, have more social civility, develop solidarity and do good deeds," he reiterated.

Ma'ruf counseled that it was important for Muslims to deal with differences more wisely.

"It is also important to build a sense of brotherhood so that harmonious relations between religious followers are improved. We must be able to manage differences and use points of agreement to unite us and make our relations more harmonious," he concluded.
