Islamic economic exponents to gather at Muslims Economic Congress

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) through its Islamic Economic Empowerment Commission to hold Muslims Economic Congress (KEU) in Grand Sahid Hotel, Jakarta, on April 22-24. The congress will talk about "New Era of Indonesian Economic." 

The head of the commission, M. Azrul Tanjung, said it was the first time for MUI to hold the congress. It was aimed at inventarising and resolving national economic problems.  

"It was necessary to coordinate, consolidate, colaborate and synergize all the Islamic economic exponents to realize people welfare," he said in a press release received by Republika.co.id on Friday (April 21). 

Azrul said article 33 of Indonesian Constitution said that nasional economic activities should be conducted based on economic democracy by considering the principle of togetherness, justified eficiency, and so on. However, the fact said many economic power had not been fairly distributed.  

According to Azrul, capital ownership to some important factors, especially those related to people's life were monopolized by certain parties. In fact, Constitution said all Indonesian nation might participate on it. 

Azrul said the economic assets nowadays were controlled ny foreigners and corporates. "While middle and small business only got 20 percents of proportion of the total national economic values. That's why there economic and income gaps becomes Indonesian economic problems," he said. 

Azrul said the congress was a follow up of the recent Indonesian Muslim Congress IV in Yogyakarta on February 5-11, 2015. It was hoped to be an important moment to the waking of Islamic economic.
