REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- KH Ma'ruf Amin was elected as chairman of Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in the period 2015-2020. The election was done through deliberation of the formation team at 9th National Congress in Surabaya, Thursday (27/8).

"The team formation has been agreed and congratulated KH Ma'ruf Amin as chairman," said Chairman of Formation Team of 9th MUI National Congress, Din Syamsuddin.

KH Ma'ruf Amin who currently also serves as Rais Aam Syuriyah of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is believed to be able to bring MUI to become great Islamic organization in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Anwar Abbas was elected as general secretary of MUI. Deputi of chairman of MUI is filled by two people, namely Slamet Effendy Yusuf and Yunahar Ilyas. Then, general treasurer is Amani Lubis.

In the next five years, the general chairman and deputy of general chairman will be assisted by 12 chairmen, eight deputy of secretary general, and five treasurers.

KH. Ma'ruf Amin said to be grateful and thanked the participants of the 9th MUI National Congress who trusted him in carrying out the mandate to lead MUI.

"Of course we will make MUI performance to be more effective," he said.
