REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- President Joko Widodo opened the Indonesian Ulema Council's (MUI) national congress here at 10.00 am local time on Tuesday.

Accompanied by First Lady Iriana, President Joko Widodo left Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta for the East Java city of Surabaya at 08.00 am local time.

At the opening session of the MUI Congress taking place at Grahadi State Building here, the head of state and First Lady were accompanied by Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, East Java Governor Soekarwo, and Surabaya Mayor Tri Risma Harini.

After the opening of the MUI congress, President Joko Widodo has been scheduled to visit Sidoardjo and Trenggalek District, East Java Province prior to his return to Jakarta on Tuesday evening.
