NU boosts Nusantara Islam to go international

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Nahdlatul Ulama, an Indonesia Muslim group, aims to preserve and develop Nusantara Islam. One of its main targets is to make Nusantara Islam going international in 2026.

"Nusantara Islam is moderate Islamic concept. It is always fair and seeking for peace," Chairman of NU, Said Aqil Siradj, said during NU's 89th anniversary celebration on Saturday, January 31.

The head of Indonesia's largest Muslim organization said that NU was ready to push the Islamic character to go global. He claimed that the world had already seen Nusantara Islam as a model for modern Islam which united democracy and moderate behavior.

The model makes NU achieving several awards on global peace. NU recently won awards from a US organization, Global Peace, and from South Korea as a peace keeper in conflicting countries.

Vice President Jusuf "JK" Kalla, who attended the ceremony, said that NU had a moral duty to make Nusantara Islam as a role model for the world. "It is a challenge for NU," he said.

NU currently has 84 million members, surpassing any other Islamic organizations in other countries. JK said that it was a big achievement for the body. However, he reminded that NU faced several other challenges in education, culture and politics.
