REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Former chairman of Nahdatul Ulama (NU), Hasyim Muzadi, expressed his concern over the accusation of intolerance in Indonesia. The accusation came out during the United Nations (UN) meeting on human rights in Geneva, recently.
“I believe that such report is a result of some input from Indonesia. Yet, I have never seen a more tolerant country than Indonesia,” Hasyim explained in his text to Republika.
Ahmadiyah, Muzadi took as an example, what bothered the Muslims because its believers still claimed themselves as Muslims. He suspected, Ahmadiyah tended to internationalize their cause by continuously raising the issue abroad.
“If only Ahmadiyah followers claim themselves as religion other than Islam, than it won’t be a problem for Muslims here. Then if you look only at GKI Yasmin issue, I have been visiting them several times. I’m sorry to say that they seemed lacking of intention to solve the disputes,” Muzadi, who also the President of WCRP (World Conference on Religions for Peace) & general secretary of ICIS (International Conference for Islamic Scholars), said.
As building prayer house usually involved local community, sometimes building church is reported meet some reservation from local community in Java. “On the other side, building mosque is also faced some rejection in some area such as Kupang (Batuplat) and Papua,” Muzadi added.
Speaking about human rights, Muzadi added, nobody seemed concern when it came to the death of the police, military personnel, or even Muslim leaders in Papua. He believed, Indonesia was even better than Switzerland where building mosque with minaret considered as a violation against the laws or France where hijab was still an issue there. Well...?
