The rice alms that feeds the needy

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The management of Masjid Jogokariyan, Yogyakarta firmly determines to serve and help its pilgrims and society in its environment. According to the leading figure of the Masjid Jogokariyan management, Muhammad Jazir, the mosque manages to distribute charity to the needy. 

Located in the middle of Jogokariyan village, its principle is serving the society. “You can see that we really concern for the poor,” Jazir said. He said, the amount of its pilgrims were 826 householders or 2.933 people. Among others, 280 house holders are poor. To ease them, the mosque holds ‘rice alms’.

In the masjid, there is a box to accommodate the money from the pilgrims. There is also rice alms collected from the haves once in a month. The management can give approximately 10 kilograms rice to the poor householders and five kilograms for the orphans per month. They also provide health aids for the poor in policlinic.

The policlinic is open every Wednesday afternoon, after Friday prayer till evening, and Sunday starts on 04.00 pm. Every year, about 600 patients are treated in this policlinic for free. 

Masjid Jogokariyan also set up it own enterprise, one of them is lodging. The lodge can hold up to 150 people, equivalent to the passengers of three big buses. From the lodge, including catering and tourism package, the mosque gets 26 million IDR of income per year. Jazir said, the guests staying in the hotel were usually those who want to learn about managing masjid. They come from within Indonesia or abroad such Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
