REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMMAN -- Jordan on Tuesday condemned an Israeli order to stop all maintenance and restoration works in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

Jordan's Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Al-Momani stressed that all affairs related to Al-Aqsa Mosque are under the jurisdiction of the Jerusalem Awqaf Department, affiliated with the Jordan Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Sites, in accordance with international and humanitarian laws.

The minister added that the Israeli occupation authorities have nothing to do with any of the maintenance and restoration work in the holy shrine.

He voiced Jordan's absolute rejection of such acts of provocation, saying Jordan is determined to continue fulfilling its responsibilities in defending Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

On Tuesday, Israel warned officials at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque against undertaking any restoration works inside the mosque compound, threatening to arrest those who carry out the restoration work.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is sacred to Muslims, who regard it as the third holiest site in Islam, and Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount.
