OIC Summit to unify voices to defend Palestine: Marsudi

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi expressed hope that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Extraordinary Summit scheduled on Dec 13 would unify the voices of its member countries in a bid to defend Palestine.

"Member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should utilize this momentum to not only unify their voices against the US' policy but it is also important to encourage the immediate realization of Palestine's independence," Minister Marsudi noted in a press release of the Foreign Ministry received in Jakarta on Monday evening.

Marsudi held a bilateral meeting with her Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi in Amman to discuss several issues, including preparations for the OIC's Summit on Palestine, which will take place in Istanbul.

Speaking in connection with the preparations for the OIC's Summit on Palestine, Marsudi stated that President Joko Widodo had planned to attend the meeting, which demonstrates that the Palestinian issue is important for the Indonesian community and the government that remain committed to supporting the efforts to realize Palestinian independence.

The minister further noted that the public is pinning high hopes on the results of the OIC's Extraordinary Summit.

To this end, the OIC Summit on Palestine should be able to deliver a strong, optimal, and implementable message related to the OIC member countries' stance against the US' decision. Moreover, it is important for the OIC to agree on concrete measures to support Palestinian independence.

"There will be no just and genuine peace in the Middle East before there is Palestinian independence," Marsudi remarked.

The Indonesian foreign affairs minister also remarked that support to the Palestinians should also be demonstrated not only by applying political measures but also by increasing humanitarian, economic, and capacity building assistance.
