REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A representative of the New York City Office, Jonathan Soto, has emphasized the commitment of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and the administration to continue to protect and help all immigrants who are currently residing in New York.

The statement was delivered at a meeting organized by The Indonesian Consulate General in New York in collaboration with the Indonesian Diaspora Network in the United States and the Association of Indonesian Christian Community in New York have organized a discussion on Saturday (Feb 18) in Queens, New York City, a statement from the Indonesia Consulate General in New York received by Antara here on Monday.

The New York City administration's commitment is strongly asserted following the President Trump's Executive Orders that prohibit immigrants from several Muslim countries on the basis of terrorism. Soto added that the New York City administration will continue to provide services and protection to all people regardless of their status, race, or religion.

He also stressed that the administration of New York city, including the New York Police Department (NYPD), will not cooperate with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to conduct raids against illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile, an official for immigration affairs at the New York mayor office, Ajeyo Joseph, added that the office is currently preparing measures to protect immigrants from the impact of the Trump's immigration policy.

An Indonesian descent immigration lawyer, Aaron Calehr, provided practical tips regarding immigration law in the US. Trump's immigration policy has become a particular concern of the Indonesian government.

Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi has called all the Indonesian citizens in the US to keep calm. The minister also instructed all Indonesian representatives in the United States to proactively improve service and protection for allIndonesians in the United States who are estimated at about 146 thousand people (excluding those immigrants who are not registered).

All Indonesian representatives in the United States are also required to conduct a dialogue with the community and approach the US administration at any level.
