REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The rank of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta is up to the Asian level from 137 to 105 based on the world research Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), according to a press release from UGM received by Antara here on Sunday.
UGM rector Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati said the ranking is based on several indicators, such as academic reputation, the number of exchange students as well as the number of research.
"This ranking is not an end but a trigger for UGM to work and work better," she said.
According to her, in addition to implementing the indicators, QS has specified three assessment criteria, namely undergraduate and graduate programs, a minimal number of research conducted in at least two courses from arts and humanities, natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, as well as technology and engineering studies, as well as global surveys from faculty and administrative staff.
The rector explained in 2015 UGM had some internationally-accredited courses, among others those on pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, medical education, biology, geological engineering, civil engineering, law, education dentistry, livestock, English literature and plant pests and diseases science.
"There are some new study programs which are still under accreditation process, such as those on electricity engineering and information technology, geodesy and geomatic engineering, accounting, forestry and medical education (renewal)," she remarked.
Meanwhile, Head of Quality Assurance Prof. Indra Wijaya Kusuma said the ranking is in line with UGM's efforts to improve the data that have been collected at the end of 2015.
Indra said that such efforts have been made by UGM in order to boost the quality of education by improving its international reputation.
He noted the number of foreign lecturers who teach at UGM has risen from three percent to eight percent.
In addition, the number of UGM lecturers who are assessed to see their ranks also increased from 2,400 to 3,500 people.
"In addition to making newsletters to be sent abroad, we also receive research grants whose amount continue to increase," Indra said.
According to him, this year, UGM has provided funds for 12 international summer programs with Indonesian characteristics which have been well-known in the world.
