REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, COPENHAGEN -- A Danish F-16 fighter jet crashed into North Sea on Tuesday afternoon but the pilot was ejected without serious injuries, local media reported.

The fighter jet went down near the western island of Romo at around 2:30 p.m. local time (1330 GMT), Danish news agency Ritzau cited sources at the Danish ministry of defense as saying.

"The fighter jet had a problem with the landing gear, and it would have been too dangerous to land, so the pilot conducted a controlled ejection," Ritzau cited Col. Anders Rex, head of Skrydstrup Fighter Wing, as saying.

The pilot was later picked up by a rescue helicopter of the Air Force, according to Ritzau.

The ministry of defense said on its website that the pilot was doing well and his relatives had been informed.

An investigation into the accident is under way.
