Indonesian economic delegation visits North Korea

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- An Indonesian economic delegation was in Pyongyang, North Korea, from May 25 to 29 to follow-up on some cooperation initiatives agreed upon by the two countries.

According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy's Political and Economic Secretary Irman Nasoetion, which was made available for Antara News Agency here on Saturday, the eight-member economic delegation was led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Directorate General of the Asia-Pacific and Africa's Secretary Ambassador Sudirman Haseng.

"The visit is a follow-up of the exchange of visits of the Indonesian foreign affairs minister to Pyongyang in October 2013 and the North Korean foreign affairs minister to Jakarta in August 2014," Haseng said.

The economic delegation also aimed to explore other potential sectors that could be developed through mutual cooperation between Indonesia and North Korea.

The Indonesian economic delegation to North Korea comprised members of several ministries and institutions, such as the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, and the University of Indonesia.

As results of the visit, the Indonesian delegation and the North Korean side agreed to hold further meetings and discussions on cooperation for mutual benefits.

Moreover, Indonesian Ambassador to North Korea Bambang Hiendrasto affirmed that the embassy in Pyongyang would be ready to facilitate communication between related parties of the two countries to implement the results of the visit.

During the visit to North Korea, the Indonesian delegation paid courtesy calls to Foreign Affairs Minister Ri Su Yong and Vice Minister of Foreign Trade Ri Myong San.

The delegation also visited the Waudo and Jindo Export Development Zone in port city Nampho to explore possibilities of joining the development cooperation of the two zones.

Furthermore, as part of efforts to enhance Indonesian economic diplomacy, the Indonesian Embassy in Pyongyang participated in the 18th Pyongyang's Spring Trade Exhibition in mid-May and promoted various instant food and beverage products that have and have not entered the North Korean market.
