REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former Chairman of the Constitutional Court, Mahfud MD said the discrimination cases experienced by Rohingya ethnic community in Myanmar should not be viewed as a case of religious background, but humanitarian cases.

"The issue of Rohingya refugees cannot be simplified or seen as a case of religion, because in fact this is a humanitarian issue. In Myanmar there are many Muslims, but unharmed and not emigrate, "said Mahfud through his personal twitter account @momahfudmd, on Thursday, May 28.

The main problem of Rohingya refugees, he added, was because the government of Myanmar did not recognize Rohingya as citizens, because they were being perceived as people who make an exodus from the country of Bangladesh.

Mahfud felt very unfortunate about this, it which makes the fate of the Rohingya ethnic community becomes unclear. In Bangladesh, they were not recognized, and in Myanmar they were also not accepted.

However, according to Mahfud, Indonesia must continue to help Rohingya community as solidarity between fellow citizens of the world. Because in the UN convention and by the Constitutional, Mahfud said we have to protect the rights of every human.

"We have to help the Rohingya as a humanitarian issue. Pity the Rohingyas, beside not recognized by Myanmar, Bangladesh did not recognize them as citizens too,"said Mahfud.
