REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called to put an immediate end to the occupation of Palestine, the only Islamic country still being colonized.

"Palestine is the only country that remains under occupation, and now is the time to bring an end to it," President Jokowi affirmed after a bilateral meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in the framework of the 60th anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference (AAC) here on Tuesday (21/4).

Jokowi noted that Indonesia and other countries that are members of the Asian-African cooperation should express their support for the independence of Palestine.

"Together, we have to voice our support for the emergence of an independent Palestinian state and to continue to struggle with the Palestinian people," the Indonesian president remarked.

He stated that Indonesia also supports the membership of Palestine in the United Nations, but a special meeting still needs to be held to discuss the matter.

"Yes, we need to support the Palestinian membership of the United Nations. Therefore, there will be a special meeting to discuss it," he noted.

Jokowi emphasized that Indonesia will continue to fight for full Palestinian membership in the United Nations as part of its efforts to support the country's independence.

He stated that the efforts to give Palestine full membership of the United Nations should also be supported by other countries in the Asian-African region.

In the meantime, Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdalah praised Indonesia's support for an independent Palestinian state.

"Indonesia has consistently voiced its support for the independence of Palestine in international forums, and I really laud it," Hamdalah said, adding that cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy and trade should continue to be improved.
