Singapore to host 18th ASEAN University Games

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- Singapore is expected to conduct the 18th ASEAN University Games (POM ASEAN) which will take place in 2016 after Indonesia successfully organized the 17th event in Palembang, South Sumatra.

"Indonesia successfully hosted the ASEAN University Games and emerged as overall winner," said Youth and Sports affairs Minister Imam Nahrowi at the closing ceremony of the 17th POM ASEAN on Sunday evening.

The host Indonesia at the end collected 66 gold, 78 silver and 46 bronze medals, according to data publicized by the POM ASEAN information center on Sunday.

A total of 20 sports---football, sepak takraw, volleyball, wushu, taekwondo, karate, chess, tennis, archery, table tennis, beach volleyball, badminton, futsal, athletics, swimming, fencing, martial arts, diving, basketball, and pentaque---were contested in by participating athletes," a spokesman for POM ASEAN, Asdit Abdullah, said here earlier.

Meanwhile, Thailand occupies the second position with 53 gold, 34 silver and 27 bronze medals.

In addition, Malaysia got 40 gold, 42 silver, 49 bronze medals.

The event, which was opened by Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday night (December 10) in the South Sumatra provincial city of Palembang, ended on December 21.

Around 300 dancers from the Sriwijaya University students under the direction of choreographer Denny Malik among others, enlivened the closing ceremony of the 17th POM ASEAN.
